In this video tutorial we demonstrate how to use the Advanced Login module by InteractiveWebs.

The Advanced Login module allows you to customize the look and feel over the login and user registration process. The module features a Facebook connector, jQuery Popup, Skin Login and Region data import tool.

A user can login with either their email address or username, it is possible to redirect a user when they login based on their security role or user profile or to a custom URL. You can control permit or deny access to the website by IP address and you can also redirect a user based on the IP address. A user can also recover their forgotten password details with either a username or email address.

Custom email messages can be created for failure and password recovery. Plus a simple URL can be sent in an email for the user to click and verify their user account details, making it a much simpler process than the default verification code method with DotNetNuke.

In this video tutorial we demonstrate how to configure which text editor DotNetNuke should use as default.

From v5.4 onwards DotNetNuke now uses the Telerik RADEditor. The Telerik RADEditor is a useful text editor that provides some enhanced functions over the FCKEditor, however there are certain functions missing from the Telerik RADEditor which appeared in the FCKEditor such as displaying toolbars related to a users security role and configuring the FCKEditor functions on a portal, module and page basis.

Because of this you may find that you need to switch the default text editor in DotNetNuke to the FCKEditor from the Telerik RADEditor, or vice versa. In this tutorial we show you how you can easily switch between the two text editors.

In this tutorial we demonstrate how to package a skin for DotNetNuke 5. This method is the new method which includes a .dnn manifest file

The new DotNetNuke 5 method provides additional options when installing. For instance, you can display release notes and a license which the user must agree to before they can install the skin. It also provides the possibility to automatically install any skin objects that your skin requires at the same time, for instance if you are using a menu.

This makes the installation process for the end-user much more streamlined and much less prone to errors. However this method of packaging requires a little more work from the skin developer and that is what we cover in detail in this tutorial.

The name DotNetNuke seems to confuse a few people out there. So we decided to help you out and give you some tips which will help you with minor things like using search engines and keywords.

Firstly: The Dot in DotNetNuke is a word not a punctuation mark!

DotNetNuke = Correct
.NetNuke = Incorrect

Secondly: It is all one word.

DotNetNuke = Correct
Dot NetNuke, DotNet Nuke, Dot Net Nuke = Incorrect

Thirdly: Abbreviations are acceptable

If remembering the first two rule is too much just remember DNN

11 DotNetNuke Video Tutorials - Professional DotNetNuke Administration using SQL (Part 2)

DNN Creative have released issue 33 of the DotNetNuke Magazine.

This month we are dedicating another full issue of DNN Creative Magazine to improving the efficiency of your administration time with DotNetNuke using SQL queries.

The SQL methods we show you in this issue are very powerful techniques which will reduce weeks of work into seconds. The tutorials are especially useful if you are re-skinning a large DNN installation.

To start with we show you how to update the Page Settings of a page using SQL queries.

We demonstrate how to use SQL queries to delete a group of modules from a page, move modules between content panes and insert a copy of a module to a page. Manually moving, deleting and inserting modules when re-skinning your DotNetNuke installation can take up to 10 minutes per page, for a 500 page website this would take 5000 minutes. Using SQL queries will allow you to apply changes across your entire site within seconds.

We then take a look at the DotNetNuke SQL Module. This module comes free with Dot Net Nuke and is only available to the host user on your DotNetNuke installation. Although we thoroughly recommend you use SQL Server Express to build and check your queries, this module is very useful if you already have a good understanding of SQL queries.

Finally, we show you how to work with Skins and Containers in DNN using SQL queries. In the previous tutorials we demonstrated how to change a container on a single page, in this tutorial we show you how to change the container for a copied module that is displayed on several or all pages, how to change the container of a module to a new container based on the name of the old container, and how to change the skin of a page to a new skin based on the name of the old skin.

Using the techniques outlined in this issue will literally save you weeks of work.

Shadow Modules in DotNetNuke using SQL

DNN Creative Magazine is still in the land of SQL!

As I mentioned earlier in the blog, we have been responding to enquires from readers on how they can update DotNetNuke websites more efficiently.

So another tip we would like to share with you, that will save you lots of time, is how to use Shadow or copied modules.

Shadow or Copied modules can be used to update the same content on several pages from one central area. In issue 32 we demonstrate how to setup a shadow page which contains modules that are displayed on several pages across our Dot Net Nuke portal. From this one central shadow page we can administer the content of several modules at once.

We also show you how to use SQL queries to easily maintain these copied modules, including re-ordering the modules in a content pane across all pages in a DotNetNuke portal, updating the container of a module copied across several pages and how to update the container of a module based on the name of the current container the module is using.

So, it’s been a busy month on DNN Creative as we’ve stepped into the realms of SQL Queries.

We've had several enquiries from the readers asking if we know of any ways to speed up the process of updating their DotNetNuke websites without having to change each page one after another.

From our experience of re-skinning and updating already established websites, we found that with simple SQL queries you can quickly and efficiently update multiple elements from modules, pages, and skins to alter the look and layout of your site within seconds – which for some large DNN site updates would take months of work through manually administering the site.

In this issue we walk you through the User Defined Table (UDT) core module. This module is a very flexible module and we explore in detail the various configurations that this module can create. Create your own DotNetNuke Skin

If you are looking to create your own DotNetNuke skin there are several tutorials available which will walk you through from the very beginning through to advanced skinning techniques.

If you look at Issues 5 and 6 - Working with skins this introduces you to the basics of DotNetNuke skinning, where you are introduced to the concepts of skinning, setup preparations, and how to create a skin and container using tables.

In this issue we demonstrate how to work with and create your own page templates. We have discovered an easy technique for creating page templates so that you do not require any programming skills to create complex templates.

Page templates are a powerful time saving tool. If you have certain modules that you regularly need to add to a page, you can do this automatically with a page template. If you have content in a Text / HTML module that you always use as a starting point, you can have default content added to a module through a page template.

DNN Creative new skin launched

Well, it's now finally complete! - Have a look at www.dnncreative.com

You can see the new pure CSS skin in action. You will see that the skin is XHTML compliant, is semantically coded, uses sIFR for headings, and a print.css file so that the articles can be easily printed out. The skin is also flexible and stretches to the size of the browser window and also makes use of font resizing.

Behind the scenes if you look in the source code you will see that the main content is presented before any of the less important elements, making it ideal for the search engines to more easily index the pages.

I don't yet know how Google has reacted to the changeover, but fingers crossed it will like the new layout ;-)

DNN Creative new skin design

The new skin design for DNN Creative is almost ready to be released. I just have another day or so of testing on a localhost installation before applying it to the live website.

I am going to apply the new skin in stages across DNN creative in the hope that Google will keep our current search engine rankings, as last time we did a major site update Google dropped all of our links.

It will mean that two skins will be in use for DNN creative and things may look a little odd for a couple of days but hopefully it will not be for any longer than a few days while we make the transition to the new skin.

The new skin is a pure CSS, sIFR, XHTML compliant skin. Hopefully users should find it easier to navigate and read the articles on the website.

Since January I have been working on a new skin design for DNN Creative, it is a pure CSS, sIFR based skin. - The design is complete and currently I am applying the skin to a localhost test version of DNN Creative.

Unfortunately as I am doing the switch from tables to pure CSS I am having to manually go into each page and re-code each page which is taking a lot longer than I hoped. - Future skin re-designs should be much easier though as the site will be correctly structured with CSS.

Here's a demo image of the Home Page from the localhost test area, this is pure CSS, notice the headings are using sIFRv3 so I can use any font I wish, the page is scalable, has a print version, is semantically coded, the main content is placed at the top of the source code and the site is XHTML transitional compliant, let me know what you think,
